Charming baby boy sitting on a strawberry-patterned blanket in a lush garden setting. Captivating portrait.

Eli Jennings

If you’ve ever walked into an audition room feeling unsure about what’s expected or how you should prepare, you’re definitely not alone. So many aspiring actors, especially those new to the Oklahoma film and commercial scene, feel that confusion and uncertainty. With so many different types of projects popping up — from faith-based films to TV commercials — it’s totally normal to wonder if you’re doing things right or where to even start.

First off, let’s just acknowledge that not every casting call is going to come with the perfect set of instructions. Sometimes, you’ll get a script. Other times, it’s just a character description and a smile. This lack of clarity can make you second-guess yourself, but it can also be an opportunity to let your own creativity shine through. If you’re not sure what vibe the casting director is looking for, bring your own interpretation and energy. Often, a genuine performance stands out more than one that’s just “correct.”

Another common pain point is trying to decode feedback — or the lack of it! If you don’t hear back, you might wonder if you did something wrong. But the reality is, casting decisions are influenced by a lot of factors that you simply can’t control. The best thing you can do is keep showing up, keep learning, and keep building confidence in your abilities.

And remember, Oklahoma’s entertainment industry is growing, but it’s still a tight-knit community. Even those who seem experienced now were once trying to make sense of it all, too. Share your experiences with other actors, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to admit when you’re feeling lost. You’re in good company, and the journey gets clearer with every step you take.
